“Dunki,” directed by Rajkumar Hirani and featuring Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role, made its much-anticipated debut in theaters on December 21. The film, which faced a significant clash with Prabhas’ “Salaar” over the Christmas 2023 weekend, garnered a respectable Day 1 collection, earning Rs 30 crore net for all languages. Alongside Shah Rukh Khan, the movie stars Taapsee Pannu, Boman Irani, and Vicky Kaushal in key roles.
Early estimates indicate that “Dunki” performed well on its opening day, achieving a 29.94% overall Hindi occupancy. Morning shows accounted for 26.45% footfall, afternoon shows saw 21.77% occupancy, evening shows reached 28.92% occupancy, and night shows recorded the highest footfall at 42.62%. The film’s release on a Thursday suggests potential benefits from an extended weekend, with Christmas falling on Monday, December 25.
Hindi language occupancy for ICE (Indian Cinema Exhibition) was 24.33%, with afternoon shows leading at 37%.
In terms of regional footfall, Kolkata topped the list with 55.25%, followed by Chennai at 38%, and Hyderabad at 37.75%. Chandigarh, Jaipur, Mumbai, and Delhi NCR reported occupancies of 34%, 30%, 29.75%, and 31%, respectively.

However, “Salaar” surpassed “Dunki” in advance bookings, with an impressive total of 223,834 tickets sold across the country, accumulating an advance total of Rs 48.94 crore. This marked a nearly Rs 19 crore head start over “Dunki.” Despite “Dunki” collecting Rs 30 crore on its opening day, it represents the lowest Day 1 collection for a Shah Rukh Khan starrer in the year. “Salaar” received positive early buzz from fans, and its strong advance booking suggested the potential for one of the biggest Day 1 collections, possibly nearing Rs 90 crore.
