Diljit Dosanjh Opens Up About Childhood Separation: “Nobody Asked Me”

Actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh recently reflected on his childhood experiences in a candid interview. Recalling a pivotal moment from his past, he shared how his parents made the decision to send him away with his maternal uncle to Ludhiana at the age of 11 without consulting him.

During a conversation with Ranveer Allahbadia on the podcast, Diljit opened up about this significant event in his life. “I shifted from my home when I was 11. I moved to my uncle’s house in Ludhiana from my village. My uncle had told my father, ‘Isko mere saath sheher bhej do (send him to the city with me).’ My parents agreed and said, ‘Haanji le jaao (take him with you).’ Nobody asked me if I wanted to go or not,” he recounted.

Although Diljit now understands the intention behind his parents’ decision and acknowledges it was made for his future prospects, at that time, he couldn’t help but feel saddened by the abrupt change. “I felt bad,” he admitted.

Living in Ludhiana presented its own set of challenges for the ‘Amar Singh Chamkila‘ actor. He reminisced, “I was very fond of Diwali and Holi. But in Ludhiana, I used to live alone in a room. There was no TV also. I just used to go to school and come back. I used to have a lot of free time in hand since there were no mobile phones. I couldn’t call my parents because the calls were expensive.”

As a consequence of this separation from his family at such a young age, Diljit confessed to feeling disconnected from them. “So, at the age of 11, my connection with my family broke,” he lamented. Despite this, he holds deep respect for his mother and cherishes his father’s support. “He just said, ‘You will get a house to live in and food to eat. Rest, it is your life.'”
