The 2018 Indian horror-fantasy film Tumbbad has made a significant comeback with its 2024 re-release in India, raking in over ₹13 crore at the box office within a week. The movie, directed by Rahi Anil Barve and starring Sohum Shah, has surprised audiences by outperforming its original box office performance, becoming a cult classic in the process.
A Cult Classic Resurfaces
Tumbbad, which blends folklore and horror with visually stunning storytelling, initially had a lukewarm reception at the box office back in 2018. However, its re-release in 2024 has turned the tide, showing just how much the film was ahead of its time. In its first seven days back in theaters, the movie has earned ₹12.70 crore, surpassing its original total earnings from six years ago.
The film’s strong weekday performance is particularly impressive, with collections even surpassing the earnings from its re-release’s opening day on both Monday and Tuesday. With National Cinema Day around the corner, expectations are high for another boost in box office numbers.
Tumbbad Box Office Report: Day 7
Tumbbad is expected to continue its strong performance as it heads into its second weekend, with projections showing that it could earn even more on its second Friday than it did on its opening day. In comparison to its initial release, the current box office numbers are nearly four times higher. During its original run, Tumbbad collected ₹1.60 crore on its first day, followed by ₹2.60 crore on day two and ₹3.05 crore on day three. The numbers steadily dropped during the weekdays, earning ₹1.70 crore on day four, ₹1.60 crore on day five, and ₹1.35 crore on day six.
However, the re-release is telling a different story. The movie’s resurgence has left both fans and critics re-evaluating its legacy. If the film’s collections continue to grow and meet its budget, it could easily be labeled a hit this time around.
The Magic of Tumbbad
Produced by Anand Gandhi, Tumbbad has captivated audiences with its haunting narrative of a man’s obsessive quest for hidden treasure in a cursed village. The film explores themes of greed, mythology, and fantasy, set against a dark and atmospheric backdrop. With its re-release, backed by Eros International and Aanand L Rai, Tumbbad has attracted both new viewers and longtime fans, reigniting interest in its unique storytelling.
What’s Next?
Adding to the excitement is the recent announcement of Tumbbad 2, with lead actor Sohum Shah confirming that a sequel is officially in the works. This news has heightened anticipation, as fans eagerly await a continuation of the film’s eerie and mesmerizing universe.
