In just a week, the highly anticipated ODI World Cup 2023 is set to kick off, featuring 10 formidable teams vying for the coveted ICC title after a four-year hiatus. The majority of the teams have landed in India, ready for a month-and-a-half-long campaign, armed with their finalized 15-member squads.
India, the final team to unveil their roster, made a significant last-minute alteration. Ravichandran Ashwin replaced the injured Axar Patel in the squad after Patel’s struggle to recuperate from a thigh injury.
R. Ashwin wasn’t the only player to secure a late spot on the team. Australia made two bold decisions on the final day of squad submissions. Firstly, they opted to include Travis Head, who was recovering from a broken finger. In a surprising move, Australia omitted spinner Ashton Agar, instead naming Marnus Labuschagne as his replacement.
This strategic shift leaves Australia with only one specialist spinner, Adam Zampa, who is looking to bounce back after a challenging series against South Africa, culminating in an expensive outing (0/113) in September.
